L.216

A small French figural lamp, which is attractive due to its pleasant appearance in playful Art Nouveau. This lamp does not have a separate base; the sculpture itself forms a kind of pedestal through the figure's widespread wall dress. A separate base may have been lost. However, there is no way of securely attaching a base. The lamp is believed to be from the late Art Nouveau period, around 1910.

As expected, the figure is made with zinc casting, but the casting is so thin in places that you can see small holes and cracks here and there. The base area was also cracked in two places and badly deformed, so that the contact surface was not even and the lamp rocked back and forth. After I glued the cracked areas, holes and cracks with Stabilit®, I filled the lower area of the base with a large amount of a 2-component filler (for cars) and closed it with a suitably cut metal disc. This gave the lamp a good weight and stability.

The figure is signed, unfortunately completely illegible. I straightened as many visible cast seams as possible. I then primed the lamp with black patina colour and bronzed it with gold wax.

The tulip shade (actually for electric lamps) underlines the delightful playfulness of the lamp very well.
