L.195
A really elaborately built figural lamp that probably stood on a mantelpiece in an elegant house in France. Manufactured in the historicism era, around 1880. When I bought the lamp, however, I had no idea how much work I would still invest in it. The entire lamp, i.e. the figure, the ornamental metal parts, the black stone parts were all painted over with a brown colour in order to achieve a bronze patinated appearance. However, the original patinating with copper bronze was clearly visible under the base.
I decoloured the parts of the pedestal in caustic soda and sanded them bright. I just bent back the badly bent frame of the base. The stone parts were partly broken or bumped at the corners. I glued or filled these parts with Stabilit® by adding some fine carbon soot to the Stabilit® to match the black tone.
The figure probably had other parts that were now broken off. Presumably, a long vine originally encompassed the body. Parts of this tendril and also some holes where it was anchored in the figure were clearly visible. I cut it off from the figure, repaired and modelled the damaged areas. The figure's left arm was probably broken earlier and glued at a wrong angle. As a result, the small threaded bar for the font was definitely crooked. I replaced this thread bar with another one that I sawed off and bent accordingly. I then bronzed the figure and the other zinc cast parts in two colours.
I replaced the unsuitably large font of the lamp with a small, finely painted glass font. A small tulip shade completed the lamp. As a result, a neat figural lamp from historicism "rose from the ruins"...
