L.243

An exceptionally beautiful Art Nouveau hanging lamp that catches everyone's eye with its size, its majolica vase and especially the large painted Rochester shade. I suspect that the lamp is of Austrian origin, because the large Rochester shade is from the Viennese glass manufacturer Schreiber & Neffen (shown in the 1908 catalogue). Lamp probably dates from 1910-1915.

The large shade by Schreiber & Neffen is probably extremely rare! In all these years, I have not seen a similar shade in this size anywhere else. Also, the large vase and the elaborate, high-quality designed hanging fixture together make a stately, very valuable Art Nouveau hanging lamp.

The bronze colour of the whole cast iron frame had turned very dark and flaked off in places. I cleaned all the metal parts, painted them with brass paint and then patinated them with shoe polish. Unfortunately, the iron core of the counterweight no longer exists. In order not to add weight to the already heavy lamp, I did without a replacement iron core. Instead, I screwed the pull chains in the appropriate place. As a result, it is now impossible to vary the height of the lamp. It may well be possible to fill the counterweight housing in question with lead balls to restore the variable height function.

I replaced the Matador burner that came with the lamp with a very rare burner from Brökelmann, Jaeger & Busse, which has a lifter and a uniquely innovative extinguisher (see Kerosene/Paraffin Burners - Raiser and Extinguisher - The Extinguisher). The large shade demanded a taller Matador chimney than usual. Therefore I installed a 25’’’ Matador chimney for Universal burners.

All in all, this hanging lamp is one of the very imposing, almost majestic lamps in my collection.
