A majolica lamp from the Art Nouveau period, painted in intense colours. Probably from Germany and made around 1900-1920.

The crimson majolica vase has a pleasing Art Nouveau ornamentation in a floral pattern. The colouring alone has a strong signal effect. The cast brass base is shaped in a pure, playful Art Nouveau style.

The burner is 20’’’ Ideal burner by Brökelmann, Jaeger & Busse, made for Wensel, Soest. The flame disc is marked Ideal-Brenner.

The lamp came in complete condition with a white Vesta shade of recent manufacture. Only 8 years later I found a painted, extravagantly shaped Vesta shade whose painting harmonises with the lamp. The shape of the shade is somewhat unusual and deviates quite a bit from the usual look of the Vesta shades.

Vase of carmine majolica, decorated with sculptured blossoms, Ø 160 mm.
Drop-in font of white ceramic, with painted majolica lid matching the vase. Lid Ø 129 mm.

Burner:
20’’’ Ideal burner of Brökelmann, Jaeger & Busse, Neheim, produced for Wensel, Soest, soldered with the shade holder.
Wick knob marked: Logo of Wensel, Soest. Black glass inlay.
Original flame disc, marked: 20''' Idealbrenner.
Flat wick 95 mm.
