L.306

A very unusual, unique figural lamp from the French Art Nouveau. This lamp is the only lamp in my collection that is made from cast tin (= pewter). The foundry mark under the base is by Victor Saglier (1809-1894), who himself was a designer of many Art Nouveau objects.

The lamp consists of a lamp body and a separate kerosene/paraffin font, which was then soldered in the vase. The design is more allegorical: a naked woman (a mermaid, a naiad?) sits on a mighty, rather stylized fish head, and hugs a large shell of a sea snail. Everything is superbly modelled. The lamp is signed Ch. Perron (= Charles Théodore Perron, 1862 Paris - 1934 Bourg-la-Reine, French sculptor).

The tulip shade is from the Parisian manufacture Cristallerie de Clichy. Identical tulips also occasionally show up on eBay UK. They are labelled there as "Nailsea" products. In both cases these tulip shades reach very high prices.

I completed the lamp with a nickel-plated burner so as not to disturb the colour harmony. The burner may even have been chrome-plated because it is very shiny. I silver-plated the matching globe holder.
