At first glance, a typical lamp with an ornamental zinc cast base and a beautiful font made of crystal glass. So at first glance, no reason to buy such a lamp at auction. The second look, however, reveals a special feature (half-hidden in the eBay photos): the burner not only has a gallery raiser, but also an extinguisher, which is not too often found in German burners.

The high quality burner and the carefully cut crystal font indicate a valuable lamp, probably produced for upper middle classes. Made around 1890-1900.

When the lamp arrived, I found that the anchoring of the extinguisher wheel had come loose from the soldering point. I had to adjust it precisely and re-solder it. Otherwise the burner is in perfect order.

The lamp is fitted with a large cast zinc base, the bronzing of which is completely preserved on the inside, and with a likewise large, beautifully cut crystal font. A marked Matador chimney and a classic Vesta shade have completed the lamp.

Cleaning and repairs:
The extinguisher of the burner re-soldered on place. Shade holder soldered and fitted with a globe holder as the inner ring. The base bronzed with gold wax (Or classique).

Lamp body:
Base of ornamental zinc casting, earlier bronzing completely rubbed off (inside, however, completely preserved). Base Ø 171 mm.
Font of clear, colourless crystal glass, profiled, with sliced and olive cuts, Ø 160 mm. Font can be unscrewed; undermount thread 23 mm.

Burner:
20’’’ Hugo burner of Hugo Schneider, Leipzig, with gallery raiser and extinguisher.
Wick knob marked: HS (Logo of Hugo Schneider). Black glass insert.
Wick knob ring marked: 20''' Bec Hugo.
Original flame disc with hat-on-sieve-tube type.
Flat wick 87 mm.

Glass chimney:
20’’’ Matador chimney. Height 282 mm, Ø fitter 63 mm.
Marked: Royal Cristal 20''' + crown in circle.

Shade and shade holder:
Vesta shade, white milk glass, top rim flat rolled.
Height 167 mm, Ø fitter 232 and bulge 265 mm.
235 mm shade holder for 20’’’ burners; I made the missing inner ring from an 85 mm globe holder.

Lamp dimensions:
Height up to collar 25.8 cm, total height with chimney 57.9 cm.
Total weight 2610 g.
