L.347
This cast zinc lamp was a rather run-down but still charming lamp that came to me extremely cheap. The burner alone would cost even more than the purchase price. The pitiful condition in the eBay photos, especially also the missing glass font and the plaster plinth which was broken several times, probably put off some willing buyers...
When the lamp arrived, the narrowest part at the bottom of the vase was already cracked. When I examined the spot more closely, I found out that this spot had been broken before and repaired afterwards. In the end, I took the vase completely apart there and glued it again, this time professionally, with lots of Stabilit Express. After carefully sanding off the glue residue, the break is no longer visible at all.
I had to paint the flat parts of the vase several times until I was satisfied with the result. I bronzed the relief parts according to my method with a mixture of copper (Cuivre) and brass wax (Laiton). I filled in the missing parts of the plaster base with Stabilit, sanded the plinth flat and painted it black with Faubourg Patina. I constructed the missing handles myself as "hoop earrings" from a narrow brass decorative band and bronzed them to match.
I was able to complete the missing glass font very well from my stocks. The supplied Intensiv burner by Schmidt & Jaedicke is shown in the Goldberg catalogue 1893 as type A (type N with shoulder chimney has a different basket pattern). In the catalogue, an Agni-like pinch/ball chimney is shown for this burner. Therefore I have put on the new NeoVulcan chimney from Miles Stair, USA.
A beautiful tulip shade from the UK completed the lamp very well. Now I am quite proud to have brought a regular ruin to shining life.
