L.187

An interesting French lamp with a glass vase whose manufacturing technique requires great skill. The lamp is fitted as usual with a cast brass base and other brass fittings. Probably made before or around 1900.

I bought this lamp and the lamp L.188 at an auction in France, as I was very attracted by their glass vases. The vase of this lamp is made of white milk glass overlaid with dark pink glass. In between, diamond-shaped air chambers have been enclosed and the glass has also been formed into a vertical bulbous shape. Certainly a masterly work of a glassblower.

The lid of the font just fits on the top edge of the vase without being able to cover the rim completely.

I replaced the supplied 20-line Matador burner with a 14’’’ Kosmos burner because otherwise I would have had to fit a tulip shade that was disproportionate for the size of the lamp, which would certainly not have been suitable. The Kosmos burner is from a manufacturer that has not yet been identified with certainty. The logo shows the double-headed eagle with crown and imperial insignia referring to the Austrian Empire.

The tulip shade from France is a congenial match for the lamp vase, as it was made using the same technique!  Moreover, its colour at the top of the frilled rim is identical to the colour of the vase.
