L.149

A somewhat unusual French lamp due to its almost monochrome painting, with a ceramic vase and brass mounts. Probably made around 1900-1910.

The elongated, elegant vase is the real ornament of the lamp. It is painted with realistic flowers on the front and back, but not in corresponding bright colours, but in white and blue. The enamel painting is applied paste-like; the flowers almost float on the dark, cobalt blue glaze. This artistically successful depiction on a very dark background contrasts with the brightly shining brass mounts. This gives the lamp a distinguished and elegant appearance.

The ceramic vase was already made with a hole at the bottom; however, it does not bear any bottom marks or numbers. It has a hairline crack at the top, but this is not noticeable.

The lamp used to be electrified. The bottom of the font has been re-soldered with a brass disc.

The burner is by Lempereur & Bernard, but for the Düsseldorf company Lohmann & Ruhland. The gallery pattern is indeed typical for L&B.

The white ball shade is made of cased milk glass, so it is not quite as old as the lamp; however, it matches the vase painting perfectly. The overall appearance is so harmonious that the lamp needs no alteration whatsoever.

All in all, a beautiful, harmonious majolica lamp that is one of the accomplished lamps in my collection.
