L.015

A very typical French lamp with a majolica vase and brass mounts. Unfortunately, the manufacturer is unknown. Probably a successful model of the time, because there are other lamps in different shapes with exactly the same painting.

The hand-painted majolica vase with colourfully painted swallows and flowers is well preserved. The golden decorative lines around the flowers are still clearly visible. The vase is made with a hole at the bottom for the threaded rod; it is thus made for use with the kerosene/paraffin lamps.

The base and the lid of the font are made of cast brass, which - cleaned and polished - shines with a bright high gloss. The font itself is made of simple sheet iron soldered to the brass lid. Old, hard resin can be seen at the bottom of the font; it was probably used to seal the leaking font.

I replaced the 20’’’ Augusta burner that was supplied with the lamp with a 14’’’ Kosmos burner, because the large burner would have to be operated with a 20’’’ Matador chimney and accordingly required a shade with a 100 mm fitter width, which I did not have at the time.

I put the Paris shade made of milk glass on this lamp much later. Subjectively, I had the feeling that this lamp was just asking for such a noble shade. When lit, the vase of the lamp shows its beauty much better and more advantageously than with the usual tulip shades used in the past, which do not radiate any light downwards.
