L.101

A rather unusual figural lamp from France. The cast zinc sculpture (régule) consists of a female figure sitting on a baroque ornamented pedestal, which also represents the base of the lamp. The female figure is holding a quill in her left hand. The right hand supports a jug that is strangely placed between the woman's head and hand and does not make sense in this arrangement. The figure is not signed. The cast is not very fine; you can see a lot of cast seams. In particular, I had to properly grind and polish the female figure. The lamp undoubtedly belongs to the Art Nouveau period and was probably made around 1900.

When the lamp came to me, the glass font was broken and a foot of the base was broken off! I had to replace the font with a blue glass font that I bought later. I carefully soldered on the broken foot of the pedestal. The original bronze colour was rubbed off several times, dull and much stained. So I washed off the paint with caustic soda and painted the sculpture with two different gold bronze colours.

The beautiful tulip made of embossed and etched glass in Art Nouveau looks very French, but came from Great Britain.
