At first glance, a lavish and high quality French lamp with green onyx marble, faceted cut column and finely ornamented cast brass contours. Quasi a rare find on eBay and desirable. So I bought it at an expensive auction. But the disillusionment came when I held the lamp in my hands: The faceted column made of onyx marble must have been much longer in the past; it was probably broken at some point and they put it back in a shortened form. That is why it has a considerable play in the lower column base. I booked the lamp into the "apprenticeship money account" and left it in a box for many years.

At some point I had to do something with the lamp torso. From the conical inclination of the column and the inner diameter of the brass base, I arithmetically determined how long the actual column would have to be. It was 8 cm shorter than originally. So I decided to add to the lower part of the lamp an additional construction with my own means so that the lamp would regain its original height.

I managed to extend the column very well with the ornate, openwork top of a Moderator lamp, which I placed upside down on the onyx marble plate. I covered the interior with a thin sheet of brass. I placed the actual column base on this extension and made it narrower at the bottom with a precisely fitted and inserted brass ring, so that the onyx marble column no longer has any play at the bottom. Two square brass plates of my own design (one between the extension and the column base, another on the column capital) completed the column. The column extended in this way looks quite harmonious.

I was able to complete the lamp quite harmoniously with a large, beautifully cut crystal font, a large flame disc burner and a large tulip shade. In the end, the result is an imposing, magnificent lamp whose column extension blends well into the overall picture.
