L.328

A stately, large lamp with a finely painted Satsuma vase in a rare, hexagonal form. The vase has the best painting of all Satsuma wares I have seen so far. As it has been subsequently drilled, it can be dated to circa 1875-1890. The lamp must have been electrified at some point, as the brass kerosene/paraffin font had a hole for the electric cable, which I closed with a soldered brass disc.

The vase has alternating three large cartouches with typical Japanese courtly scenes and three small cartouches with birds and chrysanthemums. The painting is very fine and very well preserved. This painting differs considerably from the other Satsuma vases, as it does not have the usual colour ornamentation of the brocade style to fill the spaces between the scene medallions. Instead, the entire free area is filled with fine gold ornamentation. The gold is somewhat rubbed off at the edges of the vase. The hexagonal brass connector from the round base to the vase is precisely handmade to fit.

The colourless Baccarat ball shade suits this large, distinguished lamp best. I added the matching Matador chimney to the Jean Ristelhueber burner that came with the lamp. This has resulted in a rather unusual (hexagonal, with fine gold painting), magnificent Satsuma lamp, which is completely French except for the globe holder.
