L.292

(Continuation of the description from lamp L.291).

When the lamps arrived, I found that the supplied Kosmos burners from Hugo Schneider had been destroyed by an earlier electrification. However, I had two high-quality W&W Reform burners left, and the matching Reform chimneys were also available. Therefore, nothing stood in the way of an identical pair completion with all parts!

The brass mounts in multiple openwork casting were gilded. However, the gilding was rubbed in places and unsightly. I had to clean and polish the brass parts with steel wool.

The vase and the porcelain lid of the font at lamp L.292 had hairline cracks, which Mr Kühnel did an excellent job of repairing.

The fonts are made of heavy sheet brass and placed in separate additional containers made of tinplate (galvanised sheet iron).

The burners are Reform Kosmos burners of Wild & Wessel. The Kalthoff chimneys are also German made.

I discovered the two old tulip shades in an antique shop in Ghent. Their purple-red colouring is in itself the reverse of normal tulip shades: they are darker at the bottom than at the top. Due to the enormous price reduction (-50%!) of the shop owner, who wanted to close the shop for reasons of age, I could not resist this offer. After all, they complement the two lamps very harmoniously. I had to grind the tulip shade for lamp L.291 wider on the inside to get it over the gallery prongs of the burner at all. I also sawed off the inside teeth of the globe holder completely.
