L.283
A rather plain Imari lamp that I found in an antique market in Strasbourg. It came home with me from Strasbourg as a souvenir lamp. It was probably produced around 1900, as the vase already had the hole for the threaded rod when it was made.
The lamp consists of a round, plain base, a porcelain vase from Imari production and an equally plain font lid. The metal parts are made of brass sheet, but painted black with golden trim lines. The black paint is beautifully preserved and shines after cleaning. Interestingly, the W&W burner is also painted with the same black colour, which gives the lamp a somewhat sombre but uniform appearance. Only the globe holder as well as the wick knob ring of the wick tube are not blackened. They were probably mounted on the lamp later. The wick tube (whether original or added later) is in any case also by Wild & Wessel.
The Imari vase has two larger medallions painted in orange-red. The rest of the surface is painted with flowers in cobalt blue and orange red (cobalt blue underglaze, orange red painted on the glaze). The vase clearly belongs to the Japanese mass production for the French lamp market (the hole for the threaded rod was provided).
As a shade, the smaller, plain glass globe from another lamp fitted very well. Although it has the usual pattern with the stylised flowers (by Vianne?), it belongs to an early production as it is made of thicker glass without a fitter.
