A former Moderator lamp for use with the French hanging lamps. Made in the second half of the 19th century, probably around 1860-1880. The base at the bottom is soldered shut with a sheet of iron. There is also a plaque on it with the inscription: 20 Boulv. Bonne Nouvelle, A La Ménagère, Paris. The narrow thread of the former Moderator burner can also be seen on the upper font area. It has been converted at some point into a kerosene/paraffin lamp.

The ceramic vase is by Gien. It is painted with Italian Renaissance motifs, the outlines being transfer-printed and the surfaces hand-painted. The typical grotesques and mythical creatures can be seen.

I replaced the defective burner of the lamp with a 15’’’ Gladiator burner. For the shade, I have mounted a relatively wide and squat tulip shade that came to me with another lamp. I could not use this squat tulip shade anywhere else with a harmonious overall impression. Here it still fit best.

Vase of Gien pottery with Renaissance motifs (outlines printed in black, colours painted by hand), Ø 176 mm. Top of the vase of stepped brass sheet, Ø 115 mm.
Font of sheet iron, firmly soldered in the vase, not removable.

Burner:
15’’’ Gladiator burner of S.I. (= Societé industrielle d’articles d‘éclairage), Paris.
Wick knob marked: Bec Gladiator 15 SI Paris. Black synthetic resin insert (damaged).
Original flame disc of hat-on-sieve-tube type.
Flat wick 77 mm.

Glass chimney:
15’’’ Matador chimney. Height 264 mm, Ø fitter 54 mm.
Marked: Cristal Supérieur - Made in France 15''' + crown in garland.

Shade and shade holder:
Tulip shade, white milk glass, painted flowers, fluted top rim.
Height 123 mm, Ø fitter 100 and top rim 230 mm.
100 mm globe holder for 20’’’ burners in combination with 85 mm globe holder for 14’’’/15’’’ burners.

Lamp dimensions:
Height up to collar 19.8 cm, total height with chimney 51.0 cm.
Total weight 1890 g.
