L.237
This lamp, which looks like a typical Moderator lamp made of sheet brass, is actually an old clockwork lamp that was converted into a kerosene/paraffin lamp at some point. Later, they made an electric lamp out of it, but luckily they at least left the glass font on it. The lamp came to me in a very dirty condition and with an old-fashioned fabric shade.
This lamp is illustrated in Philippe Deitz's book in its original setting as a clockwork lamp (page 208). It is dated 1840.
I have corrected the dented sheet metal parts again, and cleaned the entire lamp with steel wool. The motif depicts an exceedingly charming genre scene: Two men are playing a board game in a veranda framed with vines, one laughing heartily at the game he has won and the loser musing introspectively. A young woman with a small child in her arms looks on with a grin. A dog sleeps under the men's feet. The scene is very detailed and excellently sculptured. The base area again depicts a rural scene: In a farmyard, a rooster is probably intimidating a cat.
Cleaned from all the dirt and polished, the lamp shines again in its beauty. I replaced the electrified burner with a 15’’’ Volks burner from Carl Holy. I already had a matching, old, marked Odin chimney.
A glass shade from St. Louis for gas lamps completed the lamp.
