L.315

A typical British lamp by Messenger & Co. with the large faceted cut crystal font with two tiers. Made around 1885-1890. It is illustrated in a Messenger catalogue for the French market.

The stoneware base of black glazed ceramic, typical of English lamps, is captivating with its ornamentation on the sides, which again is quite rare. The actual metal base of beautifully embossed sheet brass is neatly finished. At the lower edge, it has a similar ribbed pattern as the ceramic base.

The colourless crystal font is large and heavy. It is two-tiered and the whole rim is very evenly and carefully faceted cut.

I have completed the lamp in style with British parts. The Messenger burner is heavily nickel-plated. Therefore, I had to silver plate the rest of the brass parts of the lamp myself to achieve a uniform look. I didn't get the silver plating to work well on the textured surface.

The British beehive shade from a rather later period suits the lamp well nevertheless.
