L.164
A magnificent lamp by Hinks & Son in a unique culmination of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau! It is illustrated in the Hinks catalogue of 1901 (model 3216 on page 24). My joy was really great when I won the auction on eBay Great Britain, because such lamps are really not common. Moreover, the lamp was in a perfectly cleaned and polished condition.
The big shock hit me when I opened the package: the lamp had almost been destroyed on the way! Many brass parts were downright bent; two support arms were broken at screw holes at the bottom; in addition, 2 ball screws were missing! You can't imagine my disappointment; a rarely so beautifully preserved Hinks lamp was broken! When I complained about the condition, the seller told me to contact the shipping company. And the shipping company said I should have complained as soon as I received the package. However, I was on a long business trip in the USA and came home 2 weeks later. It didn't help; I wanted to keep the lamp; so I set about repairing it.
I placed sawn brass plates under the broken parts and glued them with Stabilit. I replaced the missing screws with new screws and ball nuts. I carefully bent all the bent parts piece by piece. Thus the lamp is restored to its old, undamaged condition.
I completed the lamp with a good Hinks Duplex burner, a Duplex chimney and a beautiful Art Nouveau tulip shade. The copper coloured tulip shade matches the lamp very well. The etched pattern in Art Nouveau is also very fitting, as it almost seems to have been designed for this lamp.
All in all, a beautiful and imposing lamp that displays a playful elegance and cheerfulness in contrast to some stiff and boring English pillar lamps.
