L.048

An older brass lamp by Hinks & Son, from about 1880 (dated by the burner), made of heavy, thick brass with pressed/punctured decoration. First class, solid lamp, which I purchased in an antique market complete with its extremely rare burner.

The extraordinary thing about the lamp is that it has a very rare Hinks Duplex burner with a special lighting channel! This channel is a tunnel-like opening through which you can pass a match to the wicks and light the lamp without removing the shade and chimney or operating a lifting mechanism (Hinks patent from 1880). There is even a wedge-shaped notch just behind the tunnel-like opening where you can light the match when pushing it in. But for this you need matches that you can rub against any rough surface and ignite. Such matches are no longer produced today.

The burner has a short tube on the side for storing an elongated tube that was connected to the burner with a chain and was used to insert matches. This match tube no longer existed, so I built it myself from suitable parts, although the matching matches are no longer available.

The base and the vase are made of very thick, heavy brass sheet. The lamp has a goblet shape. There is an iron weight in the base, but it bears no designation. The base and the lid of the font have the same decorations. The vase has additional decorations in the form of birds and plants. The font itself is made of clear glass with a matching brass lid.

The beautiful Vianne ball shade fits the lamp well, but the lower opening is almost too small for an oval Duplex chimney. However, I managed to find an oval chimney with a matching bulge width.
