L.004
A presumably older lamp by Hinks & Son, marked on the iron weight under the base. The lamp is not shown in the Hinks catalogue; as it is presumably much older. From the way it is made with the hallmarked, simple vase, I estimate that the lamp can be dated around 1880-1885 (or even older). In keeping with the (presumed) age of the lamp, I used an old Duplex burner from Hinks. The burner has neither gallery lifter nor extinguisher, and still has two separate axles for wick knobs. Therefore the burner is from the period 1873-1878.
The unpretentious vase made of thick brass sheet has punched ornaments. Otherwise there is no ornamentation to be seen. There is an iron weight under the base that was badly rusted. I have sanded it down as best I can and treated it with Hammerite.
There was a problem with the font. The space between the inner edge of the lid and the glass font was completely filled with putty. This meant that the font could not be placed on the urn vase as normally expected; instead, it had quite a bit of play on the edge of the vase, and could be moved back and forth 3-4 mm. So I first removed the putty material from the inside edge. But even now I could not put the lid on the urn vase; for some inexplicable reason the diameter of the inner edge of the lid was still a little too small. So I spent hours sanding down this inner edge with small flex discs until the lid finally fitted onto the edge of the vase.
A Veritas ball shade (pictured in Veritas catalogue 1933) and a marked Duplex chimney completed the lamp. The ball shade is decades younger than the lamp, but is at least an original English shade.
