L.063
A very simple lamp, rather built for broad social classes by the Hungarian producer Lámpa-Gyár in Budapest. The lamp with the characteristic metal base is shown several times in the catalogues of this company. It dates from the Art Nouveau period around 1905.
I acquired the lamp because of the beautifully painted shade, which was made by the Viennese glass manufacturer Schreiber & Neffen and is illustrated in the 1912 catalogue.
The Art Nouveau base is made of bronzed cast iron. Most of the original bronzing had been rubbed off. I have therefore re-bronzed the foot with gold wax. The shade holder is also made of iron.
The burner was an old Vienna flat burner by R. Ditmar (still with an iron burner cap), but it sat so tightly in the collar that I was unable to unscrew it. Someone had also tried to unscrew the burner earlier and bent the whole burner basket really crooked (you couldn't see all this in the eBay photos!). After 2 weeks of futile attempts with acetone bath, Bunsen burner, rust solvent, etc., I finally sawed off the burner and removed it together with the collar. Only now was I able to carry out the urgent cleaning of the font. I cemented a new collar and installed an 11-line flat burner by R. Ditmar. Later, I was able to acquire a marked Vienna chimney to go with it.
