L.178

This lamp and its "twin sister" L.177 are real highlights in my collection, as they consist of two wonderfully shaped, "narrative" porcelain groups from the famous porcelain manufacturer Royal Dux Bohemia and are extremely rare. For the purchase history of these lamps see L.177 .

In contrast to the lamp L.177 , which is based on a real oil painting that became very famous at the time, this second lamp is probably a freely invented creation by the porcelain manufacturer. Maybe they wanted to design a second lamp of the same size that corresponded to the theme of the first lamp, since identical or very similar lamps were very popular in those days, e.g. on a mantelpiece or sideboard.

This lamp also consists of a large porcelain group around an Ionic column, but now with a young woman artist painting an amphora and a young man who, leaning against the column with another amphora in his arm, looks a little lost in thought. A scene similar to that of L.177 is thus constructed, but with exchanged positions of the human figures.

The figures and the staffage are very finely formed and also very finely painted. The lamp is likely to have been made between 1890 and 1900, as the manufacturer's famous signature (pink, triangular porcelain plaque), which was only used after 1900, is also missing on this lamp.

I chose a painted French glass font for this lamp as I was unable to find a font similar to the one I installed on L.177 . The font was attached to the column as I described at L.177 .

The remaining equipment of the lamp is completely identical to L.177 : burner, wick, glass chimney, globe holder and tulip shade are identical every time. The two identical tulip shades came from France.
