L.247
A completely unusual lamp, assembled by myself, which looks very interesting. I had bought a very well preserved 18’’’ Sonnenbrenner of Ditmar with the matching, quite large font at an auction and was looking for a lamp with a vase large enough to hold the font. And of course this lamp could be something pompous and imposing; after all, it was supposed to carry an 18’’’ Sonnenbrenner... After some time I found this very unusual lamp torso with a mighty vase in the shape of a goblet on eBay Great Britain. When I disassembled the lamp, the former iron weight trickled out as rust powder! I then replaced this weight with lead strips.
The vase is painted with floral patterns. The top rim is also decorated with three cobalt blue bands painted with golden flowers. The ceramic glaze has some very fine hairline cracks, but these are only in the glaze; they do not show through. Also unusual is the brass base with the decorated holders for the vase.
The glass font of the Viennese Sonnenbrenner has an ornate brass lid that is somewhat smaller than the upper edge of the vase. In order to be able to use the font nevertheless, I had to construct a neck from a brass band that was adapted to the upper opening (slightly oval!), on which in turn a profiled brass ring could be placed. To do this, however, I had to enlarge a profiled brass ring slightly with an inserted intermediate piece. Around these two rings I finally placed a decorative ring made of an ornate American iron ring for hanging lamps as a vase crown, which gives the neck area a nice look.
I completed the lamp with a Vianne ball shade and a 100 mm globe holder. The chimney from eBay France is original Ditmar Sonnenbrenner chimney!
This lamp is certainly a very unusual, interesting one-of-a-kind piece of my own design, of which I am really proud.
