L.094

An elegant British lamp, somewhat unusual in its form, made entirely of ceramic; probably from the end of the 19th century, when Japonism and Art Nouveau had already established themselves in very many areas of the arts and crafts. Both art movements are very nobly combined here in this lamp.

The lamp body consists of a cylindrical vase, which has a bulging thickening at the bottom as a base. The ceramic vase is completely painted and decorated with three sculptured birds. The painting is reminiscent of Japanese vases. Certainly a reminiscence of the fashionable "Japonism" that was prevalent in Europe at the time.

The lamp had a blemish: Wing and beak tips of the sculptured birds were broken off and one bayonet bar was missing from the font collar. This is probably why the lamp did not find a buyer on eBay and I was able to buy it cheaply. In the meantime, the damaged areas have been repaired perfectly and the lamp joins the ranks of my high-quality British lamps. It could also be that not only the burner, but the whole lamp is a product of Hinks & Son, because the collar is also marked. Probably a production for a dealer Jason Lee in Liverpool.

The ball shade with the great matching bird images I had bought years earlier. He found the perfect lamp here. The problem with the ball shade was the unusual fitter width of 107 mm. Luckily the burner that came with the lamp didn't have a permanently attached globe holder, so I was able to choose one that matched the size and use it here.
