L.052

A great, probably quite old German lamp, found in eBay France. The lamp was complete except for the missing glass chimney. The glass vase is finished with a wide brass ring at the top and also contains an additional container made of sheet iron, which is unusual in this type of glass lamps.

When I got the lamp, I found out that the Kosmos burner was from Wild & Wessel. On the wick knob you can only read “Kosmos=Brenner”. The sign "=" as hyphen was common in Germany in the second half of the 19th century. The back of the wick knob has no W&W-typical decorative cord. But the wick tube is marked "Patent Breveté", which is very typical for W&W. This clarifies the provenance of the burner very clearly. One must now find out whether this logo was intended for dealers.

The burner and the ball shade are in very good condition. Only the chimney was missing from the lamp, but I was able to replace it with a German Kosmos chimney.

The ball shade is not etched in the transparent lower half, but engraved with an engraving wheel. The finely engraved background decoration is very similar to that of the old Sinumbra tulip shades. This glass globe must also be quite old. I estimate the lamp to be completed around 1870-1875. It could even be from W&W.
