L.075

A very imposing, feudal pillar lamp in the French Empire style by the renowned Berlin lamp manufacturer Stobwasser, probably made around 1870-1890.

This lamp was originally offered on eBay Germany as an electric floor lamp with a shade made of "elephant skin" cardboard. One had soldered a modern shade holder for electric lamps to a very nice antique lamp column. I removed the electrified part and converted the lamp to a pure kerosene/paraffin lamp. The only thing that links it to Stobwasser is the very characteristic metal undermount of the glass font. This undermount was fixed to the lamp from the beginning.

The design of the base and the column clearly belong to the second half of the 19th century. I perceive this style as "Empire style". The whole arrangement consists of 4 pieces of onyx marble and finely cast brass parts. The brass garland running diagonally around was broken in two places and had to be carefully soldered. The upper marble column unfortunately fell off my table and broke into 5 pieces, which I carefully glued back together.

Years later, I found a very beautiful glass font with a gold garland of leaves all around, which fitted the style of the lamp perfectly, as if it had been made for this lamp. I plastered this font into the existing metal undermount and since then it complements this lamp in the best way. Lastly, I fitted the lamp with a high-quality Elite burner, an original Odin chimney (a brand of Carl Holy for the French market) and a beautiful hand-painted tulip shade.

The finished lamp, assembled from parts from different sources, is certainly one of the most beautiful and valuable column lamps in my collection. My wife calls it a "palace lamp".
